D. Pedro de Sousa Coutinho Monteiro Paim, born on 6.10.1808, inherited the properties belonging to Herdade do Freixo, which had been in the family since the time of his great-great grandfather, D. Fernão de Sousa de Castelo-Branco Coutinho e Menezes, the 10th Count of Redondo.
The marriage of D. Pedro de Sousa Coutinho Monteiro Paim to D. Eugénia Maria de Assis Castelo Branco on 31st August 1839, connected the family with several noble houses, namely the House of Palma. Nowadays the Vasconcelos e Sousa family are the representatives of those titled houses.
The land belonging to Herdade do Freixo has been the passion of the Vasconcelos e Sousa family who have been the faithful custodians of local animal and plant life.
From this passion to preserve the rural landscape of Herdade do Freixo alongside the family's tradition of wine making since 1790, came Pedro de Vasconcelos e Sousa's dream of building a unique project in their beloved Alentejo, alongside his investment partners producing classic wines that represent the essence of their birthplace and also protect their land in terms of agriculture, visual and environmental impact.
This is an innovative project with a respect for nature at its heart and an attractive terroir that is expressed in its wines.
